Over on the Independent I read a piece called Want to write a best-seller? Scientists claim this algorithm will tell you how. Sadly the piece just gives some general advice (avoid adverbs and foreign / obscure words). I do like the name of the tool – statistical stylometry; this at least let’s you find the original article: STONY BROOK COMPUTER SCIENCE PROFESSOR QUANTIFIES SOME ELEMENTS OF WRITING STYLE THAT DIFFERENTIATE SUCCESSFUL FICTION. Call me old fashioned but I prefer snappier titles – these read like stand-firsts to me!
If you want to put your own work through the analyser I found this software here: The Signature Stylometric System. Enjoy! Do let me know what you find!
